"Oscar?" Tyler yelled as he spotted one of his former classmates walking past, accompanied by someone who appeared to be his older brother.
"Tyler!" Oscar exclaimed as he turned towards the familiar voice. "DUDE! Where ya' been?"
"Florida, Vulcan, Hawai'i, Wales, London ..." Tyler giggled as he counted on his fingers.
"Dufus!" Oscar grinned as he playfully punched Tyler's arm. "Seriously, you just kinda vanished."
"C'mon, me and a few of my brothers were just getting ready to grab a snack; I'll explain it better while we're eating," Tyler stated.
"We don't..." Oscars's brother started to reply, only to be interrupted by Tyler, an unusual seriousness to his voice.
"That wasn't an offer; I'm buying," Tyler informed the brother firmly, earning him shocked looks from both boys.
"You'll understand," Tyler assured Oscar, "probably too much. Both of you need something to eat; get what you want, and if I think you're trying to be cheap I'll triple your order."
Before either could respond, Cory joined them. "You inviting your friend and his brother to lunch, bro?"
"Yep; but you might need to help, Cor!" Tyler giggled. "Guys, this is my big bro, Patriarch Cory Short, Patriarch of Family Clan Short of Vulcan. Cor, this is my friend from school, Oscar Fenwick, and that's his brother Julian. You might need to fill Julian in on what happens when big brothers argue with me!"
Cory grinned at the two shocked boys. "Yeah, I'm really the Patriarch; just call me Cory, okay? Julian? Ty doesn't put his foot down unless there's something that he's noticed. Last time I tried arguing with him about something he noticed, I ended up in Siberia, wearing a speedo."
"Can you show me how to do that?" Oscar giggled, earning him a warning glare from Julian.
Noticing the situation, Cory advised "Julian? You can turn off Daddy mode; right now there's so much security around here that if I stub my toe, two dozen guys will vaporize the chair. Let Oscar be a kid, and let Tyler get you updated before he helps you. Both of us are Empaths, and just based on what I've felt from both of you, you're going to be getting a lot of unexpected help. Anything Ty tells you is just like I ordered it; he has that authority, and if he says it, I promise that exactly what he orders will be done."
"He can't be older than Oscar, and he's eight!" Julian commented.
"Tyler was either directly responsible for, or assisted with, the first rescues our family did, even before we were Clan," Cory explained. "He's a founding member of Family Clan Short, and by the look on his face, you guys are now under his protection. Do you see that little guy over there sitting on his mom's lap?"
Julian nodded. "Yeah, where'd he get that shirt, I want one."
"That lady became his mom about two hours ago," Cory explained. "Tyler and his team restrained his former father, gathered evidence, and delivered it for prosecution. His former father was executed for his crimes against Kelly, and Gail adopted him immediately after he asked her to be his mommy. Talk to her about the shirt; she made it for him, but since she was adopted I'm sure she'll make one for you, too. She runs the tee-shirt booth by Dillards; anything you want from there is covered by the Clan, since she's one of us. Yes, I'm adopted too, just like Ty."
Julian was about to reply when a brown-haired kid appeared from nowhere next to the woman that Cory had pointed out. After a couple of whispered exchanges, a package appeared on the table in front of them. The brown-haired kid picked up the package, then handed it to the kid that Cory had called Kelly. With a proud look on his face, Kelly ran over to them, skidding to a stop in front of Julian and Cory. "Uncle Cory! Uncle Kyle says Julian an' Oscar are 'dopted too, so Mommy make them their own special shirts!"
"Well, since your Mommy made them, I think it is only fair that you give the shirts to their new owners," Cory smiled.
With a big grin, Kelly tore into the package, pulling out two shirts. He grabbed the biggest one, and unfolded it so that everyone could see it. While stating the same thing as Kelly's shirt, this one was dark blue, and bore the FCS Fleet Intel crest. "This one's for you, Julian; Uncle Kyle says Uncle Ty is gonna explain the round thingie after we leave the mall."
"Thank you, Kelly; please tell your Mommy and Uncle Kyle thanks from me too, okay?" Julian stated with a smile as he accepted the shirt and put it over what he was wearing.
Oscar's shirt matched Julian's with the exception of one detail; it stated "My Mommy and Big Brother love me so much that they adopted me!"
"We were cousins," Julian stated as he watched Oscar giving Kelly a long hug of appreciation. "Mom had to pull a lot of strings to make it happen."
Cory tilted his head for a few seconds, then grinned. "Tyler was worried, so he had his team back home do a little looking. You and I need to go talk with your Mom; Tyler's going to start catching your brother up on a few things. We'll be back pretty quick, probably with your Mom."
"Not likely, she hates malls," Julian grinned.
Kyle appeared next to Cory, a grin on his face. "That shirt looks good on you, Julian!"
"Julian, this is my brother Kyle," Cory stated. "We're trying to decide if I rescued him or he rescued me; either way, Family Clan Short began when we met. He's also Ty's husband; in about ten seconds, I think you'll start to understand just why I respect the opinions of these two so much."
"Hey, Kyle," Julian smiled. "Thanks for helping with the shirts; I love mine, but I think Oscar's planning on wearing his until it falls off!"
"That's gonna be a while, it's Starfleet Uniform grade!" Kyle grinned. "You're welcome; let's go visit your Mom!"
Before he could blink, Julian found himself, Kyle, and Cory just inside the front door. "Mom?" he announced, his voice showing his shock.
Seconds later, a mid-30's woman came running from the back of the condo. "Julian? Are you okay, where's your brother, how'd you get home ..."
"Chill, Mom, everything's fine," Julian smiled. "Mom, this is Patriarch Cory Short, and his brother Kyle. Oscar's eating lunch with his friend Tyler. Tyler's Cory's brother now too, and there's so much security protecting him and the rest of the Clan kids there that even I'm not worried about Oscar. Guys, this is our Mom, Andrea Fenwick."
At that point, Andrea paused just long enough to realize what Julian's shirt said. She instantly reached out and pulled him into a hug, stating "I love you so much, kiddo."
"That was a gift from me and Ty," Kyle announced, heading off the question before it was asked. "Wait until you see Oscar's!"
"Come on in and sit down," Andrea offered as she released her smiling son. "Just what did my favorite mischief makers do to earn me a visit from you, Patriarch?"
"They love their Mom," Cory answered, "Please, just call me Cory; I only use titles when someone is in trouble or I need to pull rank."
Once they were all seated, Cory explained the reason for the visit. "Oscar and Ty were best friends in school; in fact, from Ty's report to me, they were the only real friends each other had in class. Ty is very protective of the short list that he's assembled of close friends. He's an Empath, like me but ten thousand times stronger. He felt the worry that your sons had about you, and ordered Clan Intel to find out what is wrong. The new owners of the restaurant that you're lead chef at are now under investigation by the Department of Labor, as well as the Health Department."
"We don't like it when someone messes with our friend's parents," Kyle stated seriously. "We ain't gonna let them take advantage of you."
"That's why I just started looking for another job," Andrea admitted. "I can't support the boys on this new pay scale."
"You can stop looking," Cory grinned. "The remaining members of an ancient bloodline just moved into the Des Moines compound; the Patriarchs of the bloodline are 14 and 11. As half of the group have been raised in upper class Brazilian culture, the types of food that they are used to are a lot more complex than pizza or mac and cheese. To give you an idea, none of them had experienced French Toast until the day after their arrival."
"You won't be figuring things out on your own," Kyle added. "All of the Chefs Clan-wide have their own support network. To give you an idea, the entire kitchen staff in Hawai'i is made up of 5 star chefs that were tired of dealing with stupid people. They say that it's made their job fun again, and it's one of my favorite places to grab a meal!"
"Kyle's right," Cory grinned, "You'd be surprised at how much kids appreciate presentation instead of a spoonful of something dumped on a plate. The catch is that, even though you'll have an account with more compensation than you'll ever find in the public sector, you won't be an employee; you and the boys will become part of the family, and will have your own wing in the house. Mom did that when Aunt Helen joined us to feed me and my growing group of brothers, and due to how much her support helped all of us I insist that dedicated family chefs be given the same respect."
"While that sounds good, I can't make a decision like that without both boy's input," Andrea admitted.
"That's what I like to hear," Cory smiled. He had to pause however, as his commbadge beeped.
"This is Cory," he stated as he activated the badge.
"Cory, this is Oscar. Can you tell Mommy that Tyler's explained what you asked her, and that I like the idea. It sounds really fun!"
"She heard you, Oscar!" Cory laughed. "Tell Ty that I said no fair tapping into my commbadge!"
"We didn't use yours, we used Kyle's!" Oscar giggled. "I gotta go, Kelly's gonna help us pick out a shirt for Mommy! This new badge thing Ty gave me is fun!"
Shaking his head, Cory quipped "Ty is obviously not waiting for me to tell you that your family automatically becomes part of Family Clan Short; he's already issued Oscar his own commbadge!"
Andrea smiled, "Obviously Oscar is onboard. What are your thoughts, Julian?"
"Daddy mode off, bro," Cory instructed.
At his mom's look, Julian explained, "That means I gotta think of me, not Oscar. I've never seen a group of kids get along like the ones at the Mall right now; I think it would be nice not having to deal with everyone trying to prove who is better than each other. Cory's treated me like a real person, not a little kid; that means a lot. This would mean that you could have fun cooking, not making the same stuff every day. I'm in, I think we'll get to have more fun as a family."
As Andrea considered Julian's response, Cory stated "The eldest brother in a family with no father present tends to take on the role of father. Once Julian accepts that being a father is my job, not his, he'll start considering his own needs more often."
Andrea nodded. "That just explained a lot. What do I have to do to accept?"
"After we had a parent who snuck in intending to abduct Clan members as sex slaves, I've ordered that all new parents receive a full telepathic scan by a Vulcan-registered telepath," Cory explained. "Kyle is Vulcan-registered, and with your permission he can certify you to become a Clan parent. Any questions you have he can answer as well; it is impossible to lie in a mental conversation. We take protection of Clan members seriously, no matter what their age."
"I'll also help with things you might need," Kyle added. "Things like teaching you a bunch of languages, giving you the training to rescue a kid if you need to, and other stuff like that."
"Do Oscar and me get that, too? Julian asked.
"Yep; Oscar's already been done by Ty; that was the best way to catch him up on what Ty's done since they last saw each other," Kyle grinned. "I'll help you; big brothers get a different batch of stuff than their little brothers do, stuff that you can teach them normally. Don't worry, we keep what we see private unless there's a law that we're supposed to enforce that was broke; if we find one of those, we tell Cory and he figures it out."
Andrea relaxed with seeing that none of them would be going in blind, and that their privacy would be maintained. "Go ahead, Kyle."
"Thanks," Kyle replied. "Just relax; it makes it easier for both of us."
*********************************
Once Kyle completed his part, Cory explained what would happen next. "Just as soon as you meet Evan and Cleiton, the Clan Construction Corps will handle moving all of your stuff. Then they'll prep the condo for sale and put it on the market. Once they sell it, the proceeds from the sale will be added to your account; as a Clan parent, you are tax-exempt in Iowa, so you will get the full amount. Don't worry about the Condo association; if they put up any kind of fight, Petey will just buy everything out from under them."
"Yeah, he's been wanting some property to develop in Iowa anyway!" Kyle giggled.
Noticing the questioning look on Andrea's face, Cory explained "Petey inherited a construction company and a big housing development in Maine. He's turned that into the Construction arm of the Clan, and claimed sole responsibility for anything needed anywhere the Clan has a presence. One of his hobbies is fixing up places for Federation Youth Services to use for families that they are helping; he thinks they deserve real housing, not some little one-room hole in the wall."
"That means your condo is going to probably sell instantly!" Kyle giggled. "Mom likes buying the places Petey fixes up, and the Federation pays market value."
"Do you guys even know the meaning of impossible?" Andrea joked.
"Never heard that word before!" Cory giggled.
"I just checked the Clan dictionary; nothing like that word in there!" Kyle added with a grin.
"The scary part is, you two might just be serious!" Andrea laughed. "It looks like my two imps finally are getting their way; they're getting me into a mall! I'm as ready as I'm ever going to be."
"I already updated Evan and Cleiton, they're ready for us!" Kyle stated seconds before all four of them vanished.
*********************************
"C'mon!" Kyle giggled as they appeared at the edge of the food court. "Haden's with them; he don't like surprises, so we gotta walk."
Once they arrived at the table with Ty, Oscar, Evan, Cleiton, Haden, and Barrett, Cory did introductions. He then focused on Haden and Barrett. "Haden, Barrett? Kyle's already cleared Amanda and Julian; Ty cleared Oscar. They're on the trusted list, okay?"
Haden and Barrett both nodded, "Thanks, Cory," they replied in unison.
With that problem settled. Cory turned to Evan and Cleiton. "Cleiton, I've heard all about the cooking skills, or more accurately the lack of skills, of your Dad and Pop. Since I don't think you or Evan wants your kids poisoned, I've arranged for Andrea and her boys to join your household. I believe having a 5 star chef cooking your meals will be much more pleasurable than boxed Mac and Cheese."
"Like Aunt Helen?" Haden asked.
"Just like Aunt Helen," Cory replied. "She isn't an employee, she's family."
"Okay, I can handle that." Haden admitted.
"Haden?" Andrea asked softly.
"Yes?" Haden replied nervously.
"Julian was a lot like you when I adopted him;" Amanda explained, keeping her voice calm. "Even though he's better at it now, he doesn't do well with adults he doesn't know. If you can help me know when you're starting to feel uncomfortable, maybe I can help you learn ways to make it not affect you as much."
Haden allowed a small smile. "Okay, we can try that. Thank you."
"We'll accept her, Cory," Evan stated. "Amanda? We're just starting to get family rules and expectations sorted out. One thing that has been decided that all of us will use is how we deal with one of our boys breaking a rule. We're using the way Cleiton's family did it, because it teaches our boys that we can be fair if they actually had a reason to break the rule. Can you accept adopting that for your sons? Cleiton can sit down with you when we get home and explain it; we settled on it after watching him use it."
Amanda nodded. "It makes sense for all of us to use the same methods, that way everyone knows what to expect. I can tell that the two of you are equal, but you're obviously different ages. Am I missing something?"
"We're twins, Evan explained. "I can't explain it here; there's a lot that we'll fill you in on once we get home. Where are they living, Cory?"
"Petey just unsealed the wing that he'd blocked off in the house," Cory replied. "They'll be moved in by the time you get home."
"As we are co-Patriarchs of our bloodline," Cleiton added, "Each of us is handling things that we are familiar with. Anything that one of us says is just like both of us said it. We've agreed to honor the history of our bloodline by maintaining the historic hierarchy of the Family, with adjustments made to acknowledge our place in the Clan family."
"Stability and consistent," Andrea mused. "I can see how that can help, especially for boys like Julian and Haden. If the two of you young men will accept my input, I believe the three of us might just be able to provide the perfect environment for kids who lack a sense of security in their lives."
After exchanging a long look at each other, Evan spoke for himself and Cleiton. "Let's do that; your experience combined with ours should make things go smoothly a lot faster."
*********************************
Everyone was just finishing their meals when Jimmy suddenly stood up, motioning Kaen and Foemann to join him. As the newer members of the Clan wondered what he was doing, Kyle received the report mentally from Jimmy. Kyle immediately tripped his subvocal, stating "Clan Short to Mall Security. A homeless youth has been spotted at the Food Court. Be advised that Clan Short is responding."
"Acknowledged; we will stand by for if you need assistance," Security replied immediately.
Colin grinned at Amanda's shocked expression. "We made a few friends the last time we were here. Let's just say that they updated their procedures some; if they had caught this boy, I would have received a call immediately."
Amanda turned to watch her first example of the Clan in action. Her eyes grew wide as she spotted what the 10 year old blond was fixated on, his expression awestruck as he stared at the six-inch fireball hovering over Jimmy's extended hand.
The boy didn't even blink when Jimmy and Evan's sons cuddled into his sides, positioned so his chances of escape were slim. After the two boys were in-place to prevent panic, Jimmy moved in to be in front of the boy, extinguishing the fireball once he was close. As the boy's eyes snapped to Jimmy's face, Jimmy softly stated "You don't have to run anymore; I know somebody that understands. You don't have to go back to that group home; I'm with Clan Short, and we're going to make sure that you're safe. You'll never have to take all of those drugs ever again."
The boy nodded hesitantly, his panic being kept in check by the two boys attached to him.
Jimmy smiled, "I think these two are going to be your cousins; why don't you hold their hands, and we'll go over there so that you can meet your uncles and brother that are just like you."
Another nod was the only response, then the boy latched onto the nearest hand of each of the two boys helping him keep control.
As they reached the table, Jimmy stated, keeping his voice soft for the boy's benefit, "Amanda, one of the things I can do that I just recently gained control over is something like 'fingerprinting' thought patterns. I can't identify the person, but I can see common patterns that exist due to various influences. There's one that I know better than any other; and it is shared between Haden, Barrett, Evan, Julian ... and my new friend Jasper."
"Add Oscar to that list," Amanda stated before turning to face Jasper, careful to keep her hands at her sides. "Jasper? I know right now your new friends are helping you not be scared, I can feel them doing it. If you want, you can have one of them reach out and touch my face for you; they can translate what they feel so that you can decide if you trust me as your safe person when you need cuddles to calm down. Just squeeze the hand of the one that you want to do it; they know what to do from there."
After a few seconds, Kaen stepped forward and reached out, keeping hold of Jasper's hand. About a minute after Kaen's fingertips touched her face, Jasper let loose of both boy's hands and made a beeline to Amanda, immediately latching on as soon as he was seated on her lap.
"He's not trapped anymore," Kaen announced with a smile.
"Great job, guys; I'm proud of you," Jimmy stated, pulling his sons into a triple hug..
"Kaen said that you feel like you want to be my mommy," Jasper said softly. "Was he right?"
"Only if that's what you want, Jasper," Amanda replied. "If you say yes, I'll see how many judges I can get fired this time!"
"I'd really like it if you was," Jasper stated.
"ADOPTION APPROVED, LOG IT!" Julio announced from three tables over.
"Congratulations, you just got a new Mommy, Jasper," Jimmy smiled. "No judges were harmed in the processing of this adoption."
"I told ya that you were pre-approved!" Kyle giggled. "This is for real; that was Julio, he's the Director of Des Moines. As soon as Jasper sat on your lap, I told him that you were approved."
Looking around until she spotted Cory trying to hide behind Cleiton, Amanda stated "Patriarch Cory Short; if you ever allow the word 'impossible' to be printed in the Clan dictionary, I'm going to personally tan your backside until you can't sit down for a month!"
The entire food court fell absolutely silent, waiting to find out just what was going to happen to the person who had the nerve to threaten their Patriarch. Realizing what the silence could turn into, Cory grinned as he replied "DEAL!"
Within seconds, every AI in the Clan ensured that the exchange was broadcast to as many Clan members as possible, counting on the various grapevines to fill in those who were not available at the moment. All of them knew that with that one word, Cory had accomplished the one thing he had been telling people for months; he'd proven that he was just like everyone else.
"I don't know what that was all about," Cleiton quipped, "But I think you just knocked Grandma Morrison off of the top of the list of adults nobody wants to cross!"
"I'll have you know that it is a tie," Grandma's voice stated from Cleiton's commbadge.
Cleiton just rolled his eyes, aware that any response would just make things worse. As this was going on, Barrett and Haden had moved into their safe spots under Evan's arms. Seeing an opportunity, Barrett asked, "Jimmy, just how close is Jasper to me and Haden?"
"In brain wave patterns? Almost an exact match," Jimmy replied.
"Crap," Haden mumbled. "Do it, bro."
Barrett nodded, frowning as he tapped his badge. "Doctor Morrison to Jordan Creek Food Court, STAT! Doctor Morrison to Jordan Creek Food Court, STAT!"
Already having an uneasy feeling of why he was being called by the conversations he'd monitored, Kerry appeared within seconds, dressed in scrubs and holding one of the deep-scan tricorders.
Not wasting any time, Barrett stated "Scan all three Fenwick boys, code Band."
"Yes Sir," Kerry replied seriously. Turning to Jasper first, he said "Jasper, I can do this from over here, so I'm not going to touch you. I'm looking for something like what we found on Barrett and Haden; if I do find that, we can help you like we helped them, because then we know what is causing you to be like you are. It doesn't make you into a different you, it just helps your brain and body work together better, which means you can control your panic better. Does that sound okay?"
"Yeah. Can I still cuddle with Mom?" Jasper asked warily.
Kerry nodded. "Actually, in your case I'd require it if you wasn't already."
Having a doctor understand for the first time in his life calmed Jasper immensely. "Go ahead."
Kerry scanned three times, just to be sure; his frown growing with each scan. After the third scan, he tapped his badge, more for appearance since they were in public. "Doctor Morrison to Klaus; Fire up Med Bay Alpha, code Band. One confirmed Stage Two, two pending review."
"Acknowledged, Doctor." Klaus replied seriously. He was suddenly very busy; not only bringing the med bay online, but also fielding calls from both Ardell and Hac informing him of the group that would be coming along, as well as filling in Antonio on the situation so that he could assist.
Kerry, meanwhile, turned to Andrea. "Ma'am, to ensure the health of your new son, that procedure is mandatory. All I can say in public is that there was a compound being used on kids long ago that introduced a defect into certain DNA strings that causes issues with certain other combinations of DNA. That compound and it's individual parts has been banned Federation-wide. We just recently identified the core issue thanks to the three brothers cuddled behind me. My brother uploaded the data from my tricorder; there is a 99.78 percent chance that the procedure will be successful, and Jasper will be coming home with you for dinner tonight. Based on the success of Jimmy's reading of patterns, there is a likelihood that your other sons will either be eligible for or require the same procedure. If needed, all three will be helped at the same time. Under orders of Patriarch Cory, Clan medical personnel speak as him in medical situations. While your sons can deny the procedure, as it is their body, parental consent is not a requirement. They do have the option to defer to you, so before asking them I wanted to make sure that you knew the basics."
"Thank you," Andrea replied. "I've seen what you mean, too many doctors doing what the parent wants, not what is best for the child. I've had multiple fights over the years with doctors over the other two boys. If any of the three defer to me, the answer is a provisional yes, pending you telling me the things that you could not say here."
"What Mommy said," Jasper stated, comforted by how she replied.
"Good answer," Kerry smiled. "Let me check Julian and Oscar, then we'll go from there."
A couple of minutes later, Kerry returned with Julian and Oscar. "Amanda, Julian is at Stage One and Oscar shows an 83 percent chance that he's going to have the same issue. All three of your boys have replied the same, so we need to relocate to a secure location to finalize the answers."
Ardell didn't wait for anyone, he stood up and yelled "Clan members! Pick up any food that you still want to eat; transport in thirty seconds!"
*********************************
Amanda was sitting with Grandma Morrison, having decided that the Clan boys didn't really need an adult watching as they helped all three of her sons.
"Did the boys discuss assisting you with being there for your boys due to the side effects of the procedure?" Grandma asked.
"Yes," Amanda nodded. "I told them just to worry about my sons right now. Honestly, I don't really want them to waste resources on me that they could use on a child."
"Don't ever let them hear you say that," Grandma advised. "Antonio has taught sailors new cuss words; that would be nothing compared to what he'd do if he heard that. These boys have been through more than most adults could ever dream of. The only resource that they ever get low on is cookies, and that is only because they eat them as fast as they're cool to the touch. Right now, they're asking; if it comes right down to it, they can order it for the welfare of your sons. They skipped asking with me, but I'm sure that they did it because they wanted to have the bragging rights to having made me do something; it was their way of getting even with me for being right about things."
"It doesn't bother you?" Amanda asked.
"Not at all," Grandma replied. "It is a game for them, but I'm teaching them to stand their ground when they are right. In fact, if I don't challenge Julio, he's started asking what he's missing. If he's really wrong, I tell him up front exactly why, but if it is something little, I just nod my head. He's learning to read me, and gaining confidence in himself in the process."
"Why do I get the feeling that I wouldn't get away with that?" Amanda observed.
"Most adults won't," Grandma nodded. "Three of my four original grandsons provided a reference for me when they were scanned before their missing brother was returned to the family. I'm accepted because I will do it to almost anyone; I haven't had the chance to attempt it with any of the Vulcan family members, yet."
"Call me when you do, that might be interesting to watch!" Amanda laughed.
*********************************
"I think Grandma's getting through to her," Julio giggled as him and Cory watched the part of the group not working on the three boys keeping themselves occupied while waiting.
"Me too;" Cory grinned, "when you consider where she's going to be living, Grandma's probably the best one to prepare her for her new life."
"Cory, Julio?" Klaus asked over their subvocals. "I just wanted to let you know, all three boys are almost finished. We're going to keep them under until their Mom is done; Grandma just got her to say yes."
"Sounds good, thanks bro!" Cory replied for both of them.
"I love it when a plan works!" Julio giggled.
